What is happening?

The Division of Student Affairs (DSA) is transitioning its Lync Instant Messenger (a.k.a. Skype for Business) service from servers hosted by the Department of IT (DoIT) to servers hosted by TAMU IT.

Why?

TAMU IT has a Lync service which is included and integrated in with the campus Exchange service. Since DSA migrated to campus Exchange in late 2016, it makes more sense to use the campus Lync service so that DSA can Instant Message with the broader campus community members who are also on campus Exchange and Lync.

When?

Effectively immediately, DSA Lync users can switch to the campus Lync service simply by signing out of their existing Lync client and then signing back in using their TAMU [email protected] credentials. On August 16, 2017, the Technology Services – Student Affairs Lync service will no longer be available.

What should I know?

  • The transition should be low impact.
  • You will now log into Lync using your [email protected] credentials.
  • By switching over to campus Lync this enables the ability to communicate with anyone at TAMU that is also using campus Lync.
  • Your contacts in Technology Services – Student Affairs Lync will not transfer over to campus Lync. You will have to add them manually after the switch.
  • In campus Lync, you will be able to add contacts for anyone at TAMU using there NetID or searching for them using their first and last name.
  • By default no one will be able to see your online status until you add them to your contact list. Similarly, the status for someone will show as offline until they add you to their contact list. If you want everyone in TAMU to see your status, this can be enabled also.
  • You will still contact Technology Services – Student Affairs Service Desk for help and support.

What if I need help?

  • Follow the “How To Use Campus Lync” instructions below.
  • Technology Services – Student Affairs will send out multiple emails to DSA with instructions on how to switch from Technology Services – Student Affairs Lync to campus Lync.
  • Technology Services – Student Affairs will post updated information to the https://doit.tamu.edu/lync-migration website.
  • During and after the migration, you can contact Technology Services – Student Affairs Service Desk for help and support.

All DSA Lync users should read this step-by-step “How To” PDF document and start using campus Lync as soon as possible, finishing before August 16, 2017.
